TEI Renewable Fuels Committee

Overview of The TEI Renewable Fuels Committee

The TEI Renewable Fuels Committee is a newly proposed initiative designed to deepen TEI’s research into renewable fuels. Building on our existing work, this committee will explore critical topics such as global impacts, emissions reduction potential, and increased blend levels. With representation across the full value chain—from farms to fuel producers, blenders, retailers, auto OEMs, and fleets—this committee will empower members to engage more proactively and provide focused guidance to TEI’s research and initiatives.

Background of The Renewable Fuels Committee

At the October 2023 TEI Board of Advisors meeting, the Sustainable Agriculture Working Group was established to develop methodologies and data tracking for scoring biofuels based on sustainable agricultural practices. This work aimed to reduce the final carbon intensity of fuels, leveraging TEI’s Carbon Avoidance Tracker. Following the release of IRS 45Z incentives, the group paused to assess the implications and methodologies related to the new rules.

Committee Objectives

The Renewable Fuels Committee will guide TEI’s research and deliverables, with potential activities including:

  • Advising on renewable and low-carbon fuel white papers and deliverables.
  • Compiling and summarizing previously published TEI papers on renewable fuels.
  • Collaborating with the Carbon Council to evaluate carbon intensities across fuel types and their market applicability.
  • Assessing regional and global demand for renewable fuels and feedstocks.
  • Reviewing state and federal policies for their carbon effectiveness and cost implications.
  • Analyzing global sustainability initiatives and the role of renewable fuels in meeting Paris Agreement goals.
  • Identifying realistic hurdles and thresholds for feedstocks across fuel types.

Benefits

By bringing together TEI members with expertise and interest in renewable fuels, the committee will:

  • Enhance TEI’s market value and research quality.
  • Ensure a well-rounded perspective in collaboration with the TEI Carbon Council.
  • Attract new contributors and potential external funding for future research.

Participation & Financials

  • Open to all current TEI contributors at no additional cost.
  • No anticipated expenses in the first year; meetings will be virtual or aligned with existing events.
  • Potential for positive net value through increased engagement and ancillary revenue.
  • Future financial planning will be determined as the committee’s agenda evolves.
