Transportation Energy Institute Releases Comprehensive Report Summarizing Five Years of Research on Combustion Engine Emissions Reduction

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Alexandria, VA, December 15, 2025 – The Transportation Energy Institute (TEI)  today announced the release of a landmark white paper, Driving Insight: A Five-Year Synthesis of Combustion Emissions Research (2020-2024) that consolidates five years of research and publications focused on strategies to reduce emissions from the global combustion engine fleet. With approximately 1.5 billion combustion vehicles still in operation worldwide, this report provides actionable insights for policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders seeking practical, scalable solutions.

The paper synthesizes nine key studies published between 2020 and 2024, identifying common themes, differences, and lessons learned. The result is a 25-page summary that reflects how knowledge has evolved and how strategies can adapt to changing technologies, policies, and market conditions.

“Our goal was to bring together years of research into one cohesive narrative,” said John Eichberger, TEI Executive Director.  “Each paper was valuable on its own, but this white paper shows how we’ve learned, refined, and built upon those insights to help decision-makers make informed choices.”

The white Paper organizes insights into six interconnected themes:

  1. Life Cycle Emissions Analysis – A holistic approach ensures reductions in one area don’t increase emissions elsewhere.
  2. Technology Fit for Purpose – Solutions must align with specific use cases and remain economically viable.
  3. Fuel and Engine-Based Decarbonization – Improving fuel quality and engine efficiency for the existing fleet is critical.
  4. Infrastructure Scalability – Adoption depends on overcoming infrastructure constraints.
  5. Policy and Corporate Alignment – Regulatory frameworks and corporate sustainability goals must work together.
  6. Economics and Total Cost of Ownership – Affordability determines success.

“Forecasts will never be perfect, but understanding vulnerabilities and adapting to change is key to success,” added Eichberger.
